Photography Exhibition: The Getty Museum - Irving Penn: Small Trades

Irving Penn, Mrs. Amory Carhart, New York, 1947The Getty Museum has become one of the premier museums exhibiting great works of photographic art.

At the Getty Museum they are currently showing the work of Irving Penn, a great American photographer in the exhibition Irving Penn: Small Trades.

This exhibition will run through January 10, 2009

“Working in Paris, London, and New York in the early 1950s, photographer Irving Penn (American, born 1917) created masterful representations of skilled tradespeople dressed in work clothes and carrying the tools of their occupations.
A neutral backdrop and natural light provided the stage on which his subjects could present themselves with dignity and pride. Penn revisited his Small Trades series over many decades, producing evermore-exacting prints, including platinum/palladium enlargements. In 2008 the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired the most comprehensive group of these images, carefully selected by the photographer—155 gelatin silver prints and 97 platinum/palladium prints—that will be exhibited in their entirety for the first time.”

If you’re in the Los Angeles area through early January, I strongly suggest you take in this terrific exhibition. Irving Penn’s work is always a treat.

As I travel, I love seeing the work of other photographers as I hope you do. If you know of a new photographic exhibition which you think the Blog should publicize, please contact me.

Ned, I've become a regular at Getty since you started writing about its many Photography Exhibitions. It's a real service you do by bringing this information about the various exhibitions to us.

I've already been to the Penn retrospective. He's amazing.

Keep up your amazing blog.

Best,

Sharon
